I was always, I guess, mechanically inclined. I was put on a machine that made bullets, shells. As a matter of fact, I attribute my survival again to the fact that I was able to hustle and to overcompensate to those Germans who would come around inspect because they would come and inspect, normally say, what is this child doing here? So I felt I had to prove that I wasn't the child. So before long, I was literally running four machines by myself, with most people running single machines. Only to prove, see, that I am worth it. And frankly, I became what they called a model prisoner and mine was a stop on inspections to show the Germans look at what a tremendous producer he is. That I was able to get by. I was almost killed, well, I began feeling guilty because everybody tried to do something to hurt the German war cause. Now, you've never fired a gun. I assume you've never fired a gun, a shell is held inside the rifle and it's the piece of lead that is released when you fire it and that shell drops out. But if you make the cut that holds the shell too shallow when you fire it, the shell and the bullet go forward and it jams the gun. So one of my practices to sabotage was always to adjust the cut. Not always. Whenever I thought they weren't going to check. So that would jam the rifles. Now the Germans, obviously recognize that sabotage would go on, so they would come around periodically and check. One day I must have piled up boxes and boxes of these poorly made shells. I just felt I could do it. There was nobody coming and I picked up my head and I saw an inspector coming. And I immediately adjusted it, and there must have been thousands and thousands of shells in there. And by the time he got to me, maybe I spit out 20, 30, that were good.
